might be wise to consultA space-time finite element code based on the time-discontinuous Galerkin method with pressure-primitive variables adding least squares and discontinuity capturing operators has been developed to simulate the fluid-dynamics of multicomponent, multiphase, homegeneous, incompressible-to-compressible mixtures (Shakib et al., CMAME, 1991; Hauke & Hughes, CMAME, 1998). A predictor-multicorrector time marching algorithm is employed, with GMRES solver for the linearized system of discretized equations. The conservation equations are mass of each mixture component, mixture momentum and mixture energy. The code has been used to simulate the thermo-fluid dynamic evolution of magma in magma chambers, eruptive dikes and conduits. The implementation of a fluid-structure interaction code, based on the same finite element method is in progress. This will make use of the two-field formulation by Masud & Hughes (CMAME, 1997), Hughes & Hulbert (CMAME, 1998), and will incorporate mesh deformation as in Tezduyar et al. (CMAME, 2006). The final objective of the numerical simulation studies is the investigation of the physics of volcanoes and the forecasting of volcanic hazard.
